Noticing the Pull Away

A gentle inquiry into distraction, avoidance, and movement.

Noticing the Pull Away

Before reading, pause for a moment.

You don’t need to prepare yourself for this.
Just arrive as you are.

In the previous inquiry, you were invited to stay with what you noticed, without trying to change it.
If you practiced even briefly, you may have felt something subtle happen.

A pull.
A drift.
An urge to move on.

That movement isn’t a failure.
It’s part of the inquiry.

Inquiry

Bring your attention back to a recent moment when you tried to stay present — even for a few seconds.

Then, gently ask:

What tends to pull me away from moments like this?

You might notice:

  • Distraction
  • Thinking
  • Restlessness
  • Self-judgment
  • The urge to be productive
  • The feeling that this is pointless

Don’t analyze it.
Just notice what shows up first.

You’re not being asked to stop this movement.
Only to recognize it.

Awareness begins there.
